A book jacket for the novel Beloved, written by Toni Morrison. On the cover, “Beloved” was created by hand, using dirt and a paintbrush and then photographed and color-corrected.
The hand-lettering of dirt explores the medium’s connection to the grave, and its state as a border between the realms of the dead and alive, playing upon the ghostly appearence of the protagonist’s dead daughter. The frantic gestures surrounding the painstakingly formed title connect to the main theme of unsettled pasts and dark histories.
